East Village

The East Village has been the nexus of hipness in New York City since the early 1950s. General modern wisdom sets its boundaries at 3rd Avenue on the west, the East River on the east, Houston Street on the south and 14th Street on the north, though there are many who deny that Alphabet City (everything east of 1st Avenue) is part of the East Village.
Today, the East Village harbors dozens of tattoo and piercing shops.
The East Village is the home of Webster Hall, which is where the influential Night of 1000 Scars took place.
