When amputating a finger, the tendon can snap and retract up into the hand. To visualize the "how and why", touch your pinky finger to the heel of your thumb. Now try and open the rest of your hand — you'll notice your other fingers are locked into place.
In any case, those contemplating amputations of any sort should most definitely seek the assistance of a qualified physician!
