Not to be confused with The Japanese Tattoo, this book is a large format coffee table photo book, concerned mainly with photographing and displaying contemporary Japanese tattoos. The author and photographer Sandi Fellman has produced some of the most amazing Japanese tattoo photographs using one of the worlds most unique cameras. Many of the photographs in this book were part of the "Body Art" exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in 1999 and 2000.

The prints in this book are large and displayed in bold colour. Other than captions, the 110 pages of this book are almost entirely photographs. Most of the photographs are approximately life size, providing a view of traditional Japanese tattoos of unparalleled clarity and detail.

Notes on the Camera

All of the photos in this book were shot on a Polaroid 20 x 24 camera. These unusual cameras are five feet high, three and a half feet wide and weigh 235 pounds. Each print is 22" x 30" with an image area of 20" x 24", and as with other instant cameras the film is developed inside the camera.
