A transsexual is a person whose gender identity does not match their assigned gender. This disfluency may occur because the sex characteristics of an individual's physical body does not match with their individual gender, or because their gender identity does not fit neatly into the dominant binary gender system still in place in many areas of the world today.

The term "transsexual" often refers specifically to those transgender individuals who have undergone some form of sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) to help match their physical sex to their internal gender identity.
