Subcutaneous refers to the subcutis - the layer of the skin directly below the dermis and epidermis (referred to together as the cutis). The subcutis is also sometimes called the hypodermis.

Injectable anesthetics used in body modification are generally local anesthetics injected subcutaneously, as opposed to intravenously (I.V.) or intramuscularly (I.M.).
